Sports Day is TOMORROW!

Sports Day - Thursday afternoon students at Royal Oak School will be participating in our annual Sports Day. Our theme for this year will be 'Your Favourite Sports' so we are asking students to wear a jersey of their favourite sports team or their Royal Oak School Shirt for that day. We are also encouraging all students to bring a water bottle. After our events in the afternoon students will be treated to a snack of watermelon provided by parent council.  

Reader Rock Garden

Yesterday, blue field trip forms went home. Please sign and fill in the acknowledgment of risk forms and make a payment online. 

Unfortunately, we will be limited in the number of volunteers who can accompany us on the trip. If you are available and have your volunteer clearance please email Ms. MacDonald.  I will draw your name next Wednesday from all available volunteers.

Scholastic Book Orders - Last order of Grade 1! 

Yesterday our last Scholastic book order form went home. Please return this form by June 7th. If you would like to purchase any reading materials for your child for the summertime, this will be our last order of Grade 1.

May 30

Today we had several students share artifacts from where their families have come from. If your child has not brought in an artifact yet they are encouraged to bring an artifact. 

We also did fact family art this afternoon. Ask me about how we made our fact family art.

We are only able to take a limited number of volunteers so if you would like to volunteer please email Ms. MacDonald.  I will draw your name next Wednesday from all available volunteers.

2) Scholastic book order: forms where sent home today. This is a great opportunity to purchase some books for summer reading. Please pay online and return your order forms by June 7th.

May 29

This morning we wrote our twisted version of 'The Ugly Duckling.' We also read chapters 17,18 and 19 of James and the Giant Peach. Ask me what I predict will happen in Chapter 20 when James and the other characters try and get away from the sharks.

In Math, students are creating number families by flipping over 1 domino. This can be an activity they work on at home as well. Dominoes can be found online if you don't have any at home. Students can use this house to help them:

May 25

This morning we watched 'The Ugly Duckling' then Ms. MacDonald read us the twisted fairy tale version. We had fun imagining different ways we could turn the original fairy tale into something new. Ask me about my ideas. 

We also read chapters 14, 15 and 16 of James and the Giant Peach. We also did some writing about where we would like to go if we landed in the ocean on a giant peach. We also thought about how we would steer our peach.

This morning we had a yummy pancake breakfast! We are so glad that it didn't rain! 

                        

Today we began sharing some of the artifacts that tell about our family history. We learned that students from our class have roots from all over the world!

1) Ancestry Artifact: A form was sent home today requesting that students bring an artifact in they can use to share about their ancestry as we are beginning to explore families customs, culture, and ancestry.

4) Jump Rope for Heart: THANK YOU for helping to make our Heart and Stroke Jump Rope for Heart event a success! Our online total is $10,203 and we are still waiting for our cash donations to be totaled. Congratulations Students, family and friends, we smashed our goal of $5000. Based on our online totals alone, we are one of the top fundraisers in the city.

Jump Rope for Heart has informed me that they will have all totals completed by the end of the week and they will then submit the order for student prizes. As soon as I get another update, I will let you know. 

Thanks again for your unbelievable support in this amazing cause. I am very proud to be a part of such a supportive and giving community.

May 16

This is the last week that home reading books will be sent home with students. Parents are encouraged to continue reading at home with students with books from the Learning Commons or the Public Library. Raz Kids is also still available to all Grade 1 students. 

Today we also started to read the novel James and the Giant Peach. We read chapter 1 and we thought it was very sad because James' parents got eaten by a rhino and his aunts don't treat him very nice! We're excited to see what Chapter 2 brings us!

Today in math we learned a new math game called Slides and Ladders. We had to solve different subtraction sentences to reach the end of the game.

2) Ms. Hansen's Wetland Walk - Ms. Hansen's class would like to go for a  walk to the wetlands on Monday May 15, 2017 from 9am - 10am.  Our classroom volunteers are unable to attend during this time. The theme for Book Week this year is “Reading Across Canada”. We will have lots of exciting activities during the week including; daily “guess the book contest”, DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) and our Royal Oak School Reading Challenge!

In addition, we have special events going on these days:

Dress up as your favorite storybook character day! Students are encouraged to dress up as a favorite storybook character and if possible, to bring the matching storybook along at school. Students will have the opportunity to share their stories and costumes with a fellow classmate or friend in another class during buddy reading activities throughout the day. Please remember to refrain from wearing masks and from bringing toy weapons.

May 8

Today was the kick off to Children's Book Week. We got to listen to a guest author read in the Learning Commons and we did drop everything and read time! 
We also started learning about plants and their needs. We came up with a great big list of "I wonders" that we're hoping we can answer over the next few days as we begin to study plants.
In Math, we worked on the tower problem. We had to try and help a person escape from a tall tower by collecting spells from each room.

Dear Parents, 

We are holding our jump event on Thursday, May11th from 2-2:30. Students will be playing hard during this time and we would like to have a healthy, heart smart snack for them to enjoy after. We are looking for a parent or group of parents to bring in enough mandarines or orange slices for your child's class to share. If you are able to contribute please contact your child's homeroom teacher. Thank you for your support!

Today we practiced typing on BBC typing and learned how to type the middle row of letters on the computer.

4) Preparing for the 2017 – 2018 School Year

 

Students Moving:

Please notify the Royal Oak School office if your family is moving before September 1, 2017 out of the Royal Oak/Rocky Ridge.  This will help us in planning for the next school year.  Please email the school at royaloak@cbe.ab.ca before Thursday, May 18th with your child’s name and grade to state they will not be attending Royal Oak School for the 2017 – 2018 school year.  For the students in Grade Three it is a natural transition to W.D. Pratt and that transition happens at the school level. There is no need to contact the school if your child is in Grade Three and moving on to Grade Four.

 

Parent Requests for Student Placement:

The following information is provided to clarify questions about their child’s placement for next year.  This should not be interpreted as an open invitation for student placement requests.

 

A great deal of time and consideration is put into organizing classes.  Many factors are taken into account such as a balance of girls and boys, student abilities, special education needs, English Second Language learners, student learning styles, teaching styles and overall school organization.  Your child’s teacher, in consultation with other teachers of the same grade will meet with the school administration to discuss and determine student class placement for next year.  We have the best interest of all students in mind. 

Should you feel you have a significant “education” circumstance that you would like considered in your child’s placement for next year, please follow the following procedure. 

ü  Make your one request in writing (multiple requests based upon class organization, friendships, etc. unfortunately cannot be accommodated).

ü  Please do not request a specific teacher as the teachers’ grade assignments are not finalized until later in the planning process.

If you have educational reasons for requesting a specific class placement for your child, please emailroyaloak@cbe.ab.ca before Thursday, May 18^th.

May 4

Today we painted yellow fish on the storm drains around Royal Oak School and handed out noticed to let our community know about yellow fish. Ask me about how we can keep our wetlands clean.

1) Jump Rope for Heart: Please note that there has been a slight time change for our Jump Event. The Jump Event will run from 2:50-3:20 on Thursday, May 11th. All students are encouraged to bring their own skipping rope if they have one. Jump Rope for Heart Pledges are also due to homeroom teachers on the 11th. Thank you for your support as we raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

2) Book Week: Is next week! We have a lot of exciting events and guest speakers planned for the week.

May 3

Today was our wetlands assembly. Representatives from the City of Calgary came to cut a ribbon which helped mark the official opening of our new wetlands sign. This sign will have student work changed throughout the year and also has information for people about the wetlands. We also helped collect garbage in the wetlands and at our school. 




1) URGENT We are looking for 2 volunteers to join us at the wetlands on Thursday. We are hoping to be near the wetlands completing the yellow fish project initiative. Please e-mail Ms. MacDonald if you're available from 1:30-2:30 on Thursday.
