Today we had a Conversation Specialist from the Alberta Wilderness Association speak to us about wolves. We learned a lot of interesting information about wolves. Ask me about something I learned.

We also continued working on our "measuring for the art show" math investigation. Today we saw a problem with our work from yesterday, we have more than one answer for some of our measurements. As a class we had the opportunity to discuss some strategies for measuring that worked for us. Some of us decided it would also be easier to count by 2's, 5's or 10's as we are counting our cubes. Our challenge today was to go back and check our non-standard measurements.
It was a challenge for some of us to write numbers larger than 15. This could be something I can practice doing at home. Maybe I can find some items in our house and use blocks to measure, count and record.

Today we were given a science challenge. We had to build a balloon rocket! Ms. Percival gave us:1 balloon, 1 piece of yarn, 1 straw, 2 piece of tape, and 2 chairs. Our balloon rockets also had to travel horizontally. Ask me about how I made my balloon rocket. Here is a link if you would like to watch how the balloon rockets were made. Happy rocket building!

Today we posted some new artifacts onto our Iris. We posted our Toontastic story we created. Please talk to me about if I have a problem and solution to my story. You can also talk to me about if my beginning, middle and ending make sense to my story.

We also posted an explanation of our inventory in Mathematics on Iris. You can view the video of me explaining the process on my learning profile. Things you can talk to me about are:
1. My model: Did I explain how I grouped and counted to find solutions to my problem?
2. My solution: Did I explain how I proved that my solution is correct?
3. My explanation: Was I clear in explaining my work?

1) Valentines Day Celebration is tomorrow. Students are welcome to bring cards for their classmates. Please do not send any candy or treats. Due to allergies we are unable to hand out candy and treats.

This morning we began to explore a new story writing app on the iPad minis called 'Toontastic'. Ms.MacDonald gave us time to try and figure out how to use the app all by ourselves. One thing we found is that we can create a beginning, middle and an ending!

In Math, we played a new name called 'Packs of 10'. For this game we have 10 die in a cup. We roll all of the dice out of the cup and try to make 10 in as many ways as we can. If we use up ALL of the dice in one turn, then we win! If we have some die leftover and they don't add up to 10, then we have to add them together and that is the amount of points we are left with for that round. The team with the lowest number leftover is the winner! This is a great game I can practice at home with Mom and Dad!

1) Valentine's class list: Our classroom valentine's day list went home on Monday. This is for you and your child to use if you would like to write names on the cards. Our Valentine's Celebration will be on Feb. 14th.
Please remember we cannot distribute candy or treats on this day. Thanks for your understanding!

This morning we had our class picture taken!

This afternoon we did research about our animals. We learned that research helps to teach us something new. Using the iPads and PebbleGo we focused on the habitat of our animal. PebbleGo was a great resource for us to use since it read to us and we could also use the words on the screen to help us write our new facts!

1) Valentines class list: Today a class list was sent of home for valentines. Please ensure that if your child is distributing Valentine's cards there is enough cards for every students. If you would like to give cards to Ms. Percival's class as well, you are welcome to do so. The cards don't need to be labeled with names. It's up to the students and parent if they would like to send blank cards or pre-written. Also please do not send your child with any candies or treats to distribute on Valentine's.

2) In-line skating: tomorrow. Please bring your helmets.

Feb 1

Today we did our good copies of our stories. We worked really hard editing, revising and rewriting. Ask me about my problem and solution to my story.

In Math, Ms. Percival gave us a 10-frame challenge. We only got a glimpse of an assortment of dots on a ten frame and we had to yell out the number. We didn't have enough to count each dot because Ms. Percival only let us see the 10-frame for 1 or 2 seconds. We had many different strategies for recognizing the numbers.

For example we saw (only flashed for about 2 seconds):

One strategy a friend shared was that since there were 3 spaces free at the end it had to be 7 because 10-3=7. Others saw one full row of 5 and then 2 more which we knew was 10 because 5+2=10!

TRY THIS!
Take a QUICK look at the following 10-frames ask me how I know what numbers they are..

REMINDERS:
- There will be no school on Friday because it is a PD Day.
