Nov 30

Today our elf Tink was reading to all of the other stuffies in our classroom. We thought that was very kind. However, Tink made a BIG mess of all of our books. We decided it would be a good idea to teach Tink our classroom rules. Some of us also thought that maybe we could talk to Tink after our snack about how she has been behaving.

Ask me which rule I decided to write about.

Today we read the story 'One in a Snail, Ten is a Crab'. Students began to brain storm animals with 1,2,4,6,8 and 10 legs for an upcoming Math investigation. We thought it was funny in the story when the author said 100 is 10 crabs or..... 100 SNAILS!

Today Ms. MacDonald taught us a new Math game. It was called
BRAIN BLAST! Students use "Power of 10 cards" and hold one at a time up to their forehead. The student then asks questions that will lead them to the number on their card. For example. If you're holding up a 5 the student may ask "Is it greater than 1?" etc.

The ten-frame cards can be found online and printed if you would like to play with your child at home. Your child may also enjoy creating their very own "Power of 10" cards too!

Today we had a very special delivery in a locked box. We had to search all over the classroom to find the key. Guess what was inside? Our very own class elf on the shelf. In writing, we wrote about what we should name the elf and decided to name her Tink. Ask me what I thought we should name the elf?

1) Conferences: are tonight and tomorrow morning.

2) No school: on Friday.

Today we made remembrance day wreath with our grade 3 buddies for our assembly next week. Ask me about what we had to do to make our wreath.
1) Dance Kreations performance form: was sent home today. Please read carefully and return attached page as soon as possible.

Literacy Update:

Ms. Plaxin's literacy group: In Ms. Plaxin’s literacy class we learned about the short “e” wound and the short “o’ sounds.  We created words with these sounds in them and practiced saying the words and making the words.  We all have started the RAZ Kids reading software and enjoy logging into it.

You can log into it at home also.   My teacher name is lmplaxin0 and the students are all in my classroom.   Please know, that the other teachers are different names and also easy to get to.

Ms. Daniels literacy group: This week we started to look at the role of the "sneaky silent 'e'". The 'e' is sneaky because he reaches over the consonant letter and pinches the vowel to make him say his own name and then he doesn't make as sound. I have sent home our first word list of silent 'e' words. Practice these words this week: date, late, mate, jade, fade, rate.

1) Who keeps us safe inquiry group:
Unfortunately, today Ms. Percival's field trip to the Royal Oak fire station got cancelled. The City of Calgary had made an error on their booking system which allowed us to book a tour of the fire station on Royal Birch Hill. The City of Calgary was contacted today to confirm our trip details for this afternoon and it was expressed that the Royal Birch Hill fire station has permanently moved locations to Royal Vista Way. This meant that we were unable to do our community walk and unfortunately had to cancel our trip. The City of Calgary is now aware of this glitch and are working to fix their booking system.
This also means that Ms. MacDonald's trip to the fire station on Monday, November 7th has to be cancelled as well.
If families would like to visit the new Royal Vista Way fire station they can do so as tours run most days at 10am, 2pm and 7pm. Parents can contact the City of Calgary's 311 system to book a tour.

Ask me which prompt I chose and what I wrote about. 2 students from our class will be reading their writing on November 10th at the Rememberance Day assembly.

1) Keeping it safe inquiry group: Ms. Percival's Inquiry group will be walking to the Royal Oak firehall tomorrow. Please see the orange form sent home to parents. There is no cost for the trip and there are also no attached permission forms as it is within close proximity to the school.

*Ms. MacDonald's inquiry group is still looking for volunteers to the fire hall on Nov 7th.

This morning we practiced making movement patterns and realized that patterns don't just have to be colours or shapes.

This afternoon students worked in their various Inquiry groups. Ask me what we worked on today in Inquiry.

If your student is in this group they will be bringing home an orange notice about the trip. There is no cost to the trip and there are no field trip permission forms required as it is within close proximity to the school.
Next Monday Nov 7th, Ms. MacDonald's group will be going to the firehall so an orange note will be sent home today with those students.

*Ms. MacDonald's inquiry group is still looking for volunteers.

2) Photo packages: Please return by Nov 3rd if you would like to order photos.
